Free Youth Music Education Program
Olivet Congregational Church offers a Youth Music Education Program that is free and open to all community youth. Classes are scheduled at the church (125 College St.) on Wednesdays from September through May.
Grades 6-12, 2:45-3:45 p.m.
Grades 1-5, 3:45-4:45 p.m.
The program's focus will be on music education, with each session including singing, musical games, and computer-based learning. Movement is part of the curriculum in grades 1-5 and hand bell instruction in grades 6-12. Students occasionally participate in church services (optional).
Classes follow the school calendar and are cancelled on days when school is not in session or there is an early release. Dean Transportation will allow students with notes from home to take the red bus that takes children directly to the church for grades 1-5. A church member will meet students at the drop-off and escort them into the church.
Youth Music instructor is Dr. Penny Draper, Minister of Music at the church. She has a degree in choral education from Michigan State University and has taught choral education in the Williamston and East Lansing Public Schools. Penny founded Youth Music Community Classes at Plymouth Congregational Church in Lansing. She directs both the Junior Renaissance Singers (K-8) and The Renaissance Singers of mid-Michigan.
For more information, contact the church office at 269-749-2631, or Penny Draper at 517-489-8785 (cell phone/text messages welcome).
A pdf application form is available using the button below, although it is not interactive. You will need to print the form and fill it out. Pre-printed forms are available from the church office or Penny.
